The Muttaburra Stock Show, more affectionately known as the Muttaburra Sheep Show, is renowned around the district for showcasing high quality fine wool, sheep & cattle. Held on the first Saturday in June each year, OBA President Andrew Fleming (1979) reflects on his experience of the 2021 event which he and his son Lachlan enjoyed with many fellow Old Boys. This year’s show is on Saturday 4 June, so if you’re in the region then get along and get amongst the action with the other Churchie Old Boys and staff that will be there.

Last June, my son Lachlan Fleming (2016) I travelled to Longreach (unofficially) to visit an old Gerald class- mate, Robert MacIntosh (1979). We spent three enjoyable days with Robert and Margot on their sheep property, ‘Fairfield’ between Longreach and Muttaburra. During our stay, Robert and Margot accompanied by their son Hugh MacIntosh (2007) and his wife took us to the Muttaburra Sheep Show. Interestingly, many Old Boys and current students hail from the Central West and many were in attendance.

The show held at the Muttaburra Show Ground was a great day featuring; sheep judging, sheep dog trials, blade shearing demonstration, sheep judging and (yes) sheep races punctuated with a pleasant luncheon served under a large marquee. One of the highlights of the day saw a number of ‘athletes’ donning inflatable (Muttaburrasorus) dinosaur suits and participating in a unique foot race in front of the main marquee just on dusk.

One could be excused for thinking that this was an Old Boys event as the Patron of the show, Stuart Bowden (1957) and several of the committee were either Old Boys or current parents, including Hugh Button (2001) and David Fisch (current parent).

David and Margot were terrific hosts. They kindly introduced Lachie and me to many locals who coincidently were either Churchie Old Boys (too many to list here) or parents of current students. In all a great day, which extended into an enjoyable evening.

Whist in Longreach Robert and Margot were gracious hosts, providing some unique experiences whilst staying at their property which we will treasure.

This year’s show is on Saturday 4 June. The Button family offer a package of accommodation and transfer to the Sheep Show. So, if you are looking for a fun and uniquely Australian bush experience it is well worth a visit.
