Amid rising rates of anxiety and depression, being ‘more resilient’ has become a popular catchcry of podcasters, influencers and life coaches. But have we lost sight of what it means to be resilient? In partnership with the Churchie Old Boys’ Association, the Parent Wellbeing Lecture Series recently presented a special and insightful Wellbeing Panel Discussion which focused on the important theme of Mental Health and Overcoming Adversity. Facilitated by Mr David Grogan, our three panellists shared insights from their own lived experiences, offering practical advice on how to better manage the demands of our daily lives while keeping mental health at the forefront.
Many Old Boys, staff and parents will remember Mr Gary Andreas very fondly. Gary tragically suffered a stroke in 2019 which rendered him with left hemiparesis. He spoke wonderfully as he took the audience on his journey of recovery and of the many “dark nights” where only his “faith, family and friends” carried him through. Old Boy and former School Captain, Dr Tim Amos, gave a wonderful insight into how resilience can be supported through lifestyle choices and how he managed his busy life as a General Practitioner and father. Current Student and Wellbeing Ambassador, Felix Nano, shared insight into his Year 12 journey, the importance of social connection and the school’s suite of pastoral initiatives which support the wellbeing of students.
The discussion provided a valuable opportunity for parents, Old Boys and the wider school community to engage with meaningful strategies for wellbeing and resilience.
