Old Boy News |
Class of 2004 |
Old Boy Mal McLennan (2004) has carved out a career in investment analysis and trading. Recognising the power of LinkedIn as a career-building tool, he recently shared his personal perspective on the platform with Churchie’s current Year 12 cohort. Mal described LinkedIn as the “career version of social media”, a space that’s formal, focused and designed to help people grow and leverage their professional networks.
Mal explained how LinkedIn has evolved far beyond its original purpose, as a hub for job opportunities, a key resource for recruiters, professionals in sales and is often the first place someone lands when they Google your name.
Mal encouraged the students to start building a professional presence on LinkedIn, if they hadn’t already. He highlighted the value of exploring career paths by viewing the profiles of Churchie graduates already in the workforce. Mal further encouraged them to explore the industries they’re curious about and connect with Old Boys working in those industries and to follow companies that interest them.
Practical tips that Mal offered were to use a clear, professional photo, include Churchie in your education history and to showcase leadership, cocurricular involvement and volunteer work.
The session was a timely reminder that career development doesn’t begin after graduation - it starts now, with the right tools and connections.
