Old Boys Nick Stamatiou (2017) and Cormac te Kloot (2001) will be taking the next step on their Olympic journeys this month. In an amazing coincidence, Nick and Cormac only met when they were both selected to play for the Curlews to represent the Queensland Curling Association at the Australian Curling National Championships in Naseby, New Zealand from Thursday 15 May to Wednesday 21 May 2025.
In his Senior year Nick was Captain of Churchie Football. He went on to study Physiotherapy at Griffith University and has a strong interest in sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, particularly in elite athletes. Nick is now applying his trade as a Senior Physiotherapist at Brisbane Physiotherapy & Podiatry in West End. In 2019, whilst playing state-level football, Nick sustained a serious injury to his left-side quadriceps tendon. With conclusive medical opinions from multiple specialists that he would no longer be able to compete at an elite level, Nick still believed that his elite sporting dream was still achievable. In 2023, he began the journey to achieve his long-held ambition of competing at a Winter Olympics. Henceforth, his foray into the sport of Curling.
Cormac’s proudest sporting moment to date is wining Most Improved Player for the Churchie’s 5th XV’s. He holds a Bachelor of Agribusiness and has extensive experience in large-scale agricultural operations. With now over 14 years of experience in the avocado industry, Cormac has held various roles in sales, supply, and packing operations. As the General Manager of Avocados, Bananas and Grapes for Costa, Australia’s largest horticulture business, he oversees farming, packing and marketing across these categories.
It has also taken a lot of generous people to help the Curlews achieve these dreams. Nick and Cormac make special mention of Geoff and Alison Maynard of the Maynard Cattle Co. who, with a truly unique sponsorship, have donated three head of cattle to the Curlews Australia Curling National Championship cause.
We wish Nick, Cormac and the whole team every success in their pursuit!
